The island slows down, the sea is still warm from months of Mediterranean sun, prices drop noticeably, and the whole place starts to feel like it belongs to the people who live here — and to the visitors lucky enough to be there with them. Weather in October: What to Actually Expect
October on Zante is warm, mostly sunny, and gradually cooler as the weeks go on — but "cooler" here is relative. This isn't Northern Europe in autumn.
Daytime temperatures average around 19–24°C for the month overall, with early October typically running warmer, often 24–26°C during the day. By late October, daytime highs settle closer to 20–22°C. Either way, it's comfortable, easy weather — ideal for walking, sightseeing, and beach days without the oppressive heat of July and August.
Evenings cool down more noticeably, dropping to around 15–18°C. A light jacket or cardigan is worth packing for dinners outdoors, especially as the month progresses.
Sunshine hours average 6–7 per day across the month, and the quality of the light is genuinely beautiful — lower in the sky, golden, and excellent for photography. Cloud cover increases slightly toward the end of October, so expect the odd overcast day mixed in with the sunny ones.
Rainfall is the main difference from summer. Early October is essentially an extension of summer, with rainfall minimal — perhaps two or three brief showers across the first couple of weeks. After mid-October, the chance of rain increases, and by month's end you might see one or two proper rainy days, occasionally with a short, dramatic autumn storm. On a typical week-long October trip, most visitors get five or six excellent beach days with only one or two overcast or drizzly ones — a ratio that comfortably beats a lot of what passes for "summer" further north.
Sea Temperature: Can You Still Swim?
This is usually the first question our guests ask us, and the answer is a confident yes.
The Mediterranean holds onto its summer warmth far longer than the air does. Sea temperature around Zante in October typically sits at 21–23°C for most of the month, only easing toward 20°C by the very end of October. That's genuinely comfortable for proper swimming, not just a quick paddle — and for many Scandinavian visitors especially, it's warmer than a typical summer swim back home.
Snorkelling conditions are also excellent in October. Calmer winds mean clearer water, and popular spots like Porto Limnionas and Xigia (the sulphur beach) are particularly good for it, with far fewer people in the water than during peak summer.
Prices: The October Advantage
This is where the shoulder season genuinely delivers value, and it's worth breaking down properly.
Accommodation across the island typically drops by 30–50% compared to August rates, with the exact discount depending on the property and how late in the month you travel. Smaller, family-run places (like ours) tend to stay open and offer good value later into the season than the big resort hotels, many of which begin closing from the start of November, with some shutting mid-October.
Car hire usually falls from summer peak pricing to a noticeably lower daily rate in October — worth booking a little ahead, since the rental fleet on the island shrinks for the season and good vehicles do get snapped up.
Flights from the UK and other parts of Europe generally get cheaper as demand eases after the summer peak, though route frequency does thin out as the month progresses. If your travel dates are flexible, earlier October tends to offer the best balance of good weather and strong flight availability.
Restaurants don't discount their menus, but you'll notice the difference anyway — no queues, no 45-minute table turnovers, and staff with time to actually talk to you rather than rush the next order out.
Activities like boat trips, kayaking, and snorkelling excursions often come down in price too as operators wind toward the end of their season.

What's Still Open
The good news is that almost everything visitors actually want is still running in October.
Beaches stay open and free all year, as they always are on Zante — Navagio, Porto Limnionas, Xigia, Kalamaki, Banana Beach, Laganas, and everywhere in between remain fully accessible, just significantly quieter than in summer.
Zakynthos Town continues as normal, with restaurants, bars, and shops open, and the evening waterfront stroll (the volta) still very much a local tradition, if populated more by locals than tourists by this point in the year.
Restaurants in Zakynthos Town and the larger villages mostly stay open through October and often into November. Resort-area restaurants in places like Laganas and Tsilivi do start to thin out as the month goes on.
Hiking trails across the island's interior are genuinely at their best in October. Coastal paths, cliff-top routes above the Blue Caves, and trails through the hillside villages are far more pleasant to walk in October's mild temperatures than in July's heat — some routes are barely usable in peak summer and only really come alive once the season cools.
Museums, including the Byzantine Museum and the Museum of Dionysios Solomos in Zakynthos Town, remain open, though smaller local heritage sites may keep reduced hours worth checking ahead of a visit.
What Starts to Close (and When)
Understanding the seasonal wind-down helps with planning, particularly if you're travelling later in the month.
Boat trips to Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) generally continue until mid-October, after which frequency drops and trips become more weather-dependent. If Navagio is high on your list, aim to visit in the first half of the month and confirm sailing times directly with operators.
Beach concessions — sunbed hire, beach bars — often close between the 1st and 15th of October. The beaches themselves never close, but the infrastructure around them does thin out, so it's worth bringing your own towel and not assuming a beach bar will be open.
Large resort hotels typically begin closing from the 1st of November, with some shutting mid-October. Smaller, family-run accommodation tends to stay open longer into the season.
Nightlife, particularly the club strip in Laganas, largely winds down by mid-October — not a concern unless that was specifically part of your plan.
Best Things to Do in October
Hike without the heat. October is genuinely the best month to explore Zante on foot. Trails around the Blue Caves, Skinari Lighthouse, and the Bochali viewpoint above Zakynthos Town are far more enjoyable in mild autumn temperatures than under a July sun.
Catch the grape and olive harvests. Early October overlaps with the tail end of the island's grape harvest in inland villages, and by late October the olive harvest begins in earnest — nets spread under trees, families working together, and a genuinely local side of Zante that summer visitors rarely see. Several wine estates around the inland villages also welcome visitors for informal tastings of Verdea, the island's distinctive local white grape.
Swim and snorkel without the crowds. With the sea still sitting around 21–23°C and far fewer people in the water, October is arguably the best month of the year for a relaxed swim or snorkel session.
Take it slow in Zakynthos Town. Use a quieter or overcast day to properly explore the Byzantine Museum, the Museum of Solomos, and the Venetian-era fortifications at Bochali, which offer sweeping views over the town and bay.
Enjoy the food. October brings a shift in what's on the menu — fresh olives, new-season produce, and heartier autumn dishes alongside the usual Greek classics.
Turtles on Kalamaki Beach in October
For anyone staying with us specifically, this is a lovely bonus. Kalamaki Beach is one of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting sites in Laganas Bay, and October is the tail end of the nesting season — the final hatchlings of the year are still emerging at night, and the ARCHELON conservation centre nearby remains open for visits. Turtles also remain in the bay feeding ahead of their autumn migration, and snorkelling trips sometimes yield sightings of these remarkably calm creatures. The same rules apply as during peak season: no feeding, keep a respectful distance of at least 3 metres, and no flash photography.
Who October Suits Best
October is an excellent fit if your priorities are warm swims, a relaxed pace, better value for money, and a version of Zante that feels closer to how locals experience it. Couples looking for a quieter, more romantic trip, and families travelling after the summer school holidays end, tend to particularly love this time of year.
If your must-haves are packed beach clubs, late-night parties, and every single beach bar open until midnight, you'll find more of that in July and August instead — October's charm is precisely its quieter, slower rhythm.

Sample 7-Day October Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrive and settle in. Check in, unpack, and take an easy first evening — a short stroll down to Kalamaki Beach for sunset, then dinner at Summer Breeze is the perfect way to start.
Day 2 — Kalamaki and Laganas Bay. Spend the morning at Kalamaki Beach, just a short walk from the hotel, then head into Laganas Bay for some gentle snorkelling — keep an eye out for turtles.

Day 6 — East coast beaches. A slower day exploring Xigia (the sulphur beach), Alykanas, and the surrounding coastline, with dinner in Zakynthos Town.
Day 7 — Zakynthos Town and farewell. Spend your last day exploring the Byzantine Museum, the Museum of Solomos, and the town's waterfront, before one final swim and dinner back at Kalamaki.

One question we hear constantly from guests planning an October trip is whether they'll need a car — and for a lot of what this guide covers, the honest answer is no.
Kalamaki has its own KTEL bus stop on the main road through the village, just a short walk from Dennys Inn. From there, regular buses run to Zakynthos Town in around 25 minutes for a couple of euros each way, connecting you on to Laganas, Argassi, Tsilivi, and beyond.
