Turtles And Snorkeling in Zakynthos

This year, I have had a lot of people asking me "What are the best snorkeling spots in Zante?". I usually answer, "Where to begin!?" So, I decided to write a post about Zakyntho's best snorkeling spots. You can ask whoever you want, but in the end, a Local Knows Best.

Are you looking for the best snorkeling action in Zakynthos (the island of Zante)? Look no further, 'cause I got you covered.

Zakynthos Island in Greece is a prime location for snorkeling, with crystal clear waters, stunning marine caves and arches, and abundant marine life.

The island is also famous for its beautiful beaches, including sandy and rocky shores, and for being home to important nesting sites for the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtle.

The National Marine Park of Zakynthos, part of Natura 2000, was created in 1999 to protect the turtle's habitat and ecosystem, and the people of Zakynthos work hard to preserve this fragile environment.

In addition, they have chosen to build modest developments in traditional colors rather than large resort complexes.

For those interested in snorkeling in Zakynthos, the southern side of the island offers the best opportunities, particularly between April and June when turtle nests are marked and protected by wooden frames.

Although Zakynthos is a great place to spend a week in the sun, it's not recommended to visit during the winter.

Overall, Zakynthos is a popular destination for snorkeling enthusiasts and beach lovers, making it one of the most searched and sought-after destinations for this activity on Google.

No matter whether you’re a hardcore clubber, want to lounge on the beach, or are eager to explore wild mountains and coves, Zakynthos (or Zante) has you covered. On top of that, there’s some pretty epic snorkeling in Zante to boot!

The island boasts numerous small beaches and caves that offer a perfect setting for exploring the rich marine life. With crystal clear waters and an abundance of colorful fish and jellyfish, Zakynthos is an ideal destination for snorkeling enthusiasts.

I recommend, taking a one-day boat tour that takes you to secluded caves, inaccessible by foot.

Our family hotel, Denny’s Inn, is also right next to the golden Kalamaki Beach, so will able to go snorkeling even on days when you feel too lazy.

However, if you have access to transportation, you can easily explore some of the best snorkeling beaches in Zakynthos, such as Navagio Beach, Turtle Island (Marathonisi), and the Blue Caves

Turtle Island (Marathonisi)

Discover a few of the best snorkeling spots in Zante at Turtle Island, also known as Marathonisi. This enchanting islet is located off the southern coast of Zante and is a protected nesting site for the endangered Caretta Caretta sea turtles.

Visitors have the chance to witness the birth of these magnificent creatures during their mating season from May to October.

The island is a heaven on earth, surrounded by trees and private coves, and features two main beaches – one with pebbles and the other with stunning white sand.

Snorkelers can explore the underwater caves and offshore reef groups, getting up close and personal with the marine life.

Opt for a smaller boat tour to get the full snorkeling experience at Turtle Island. This will allow you to get much closer to the rock formations, caves, and coves, and possibly swim alongside the turtles in the crystal-clear waters.

Please note, that there are designated beaches where swimming is prohibited for the protection of the turtles, but there are still plenty of opportunities to get in the water and explore the sea cave.

Don’t forget to bring everything you need as there are no shops on the island. Snorkel with the turtles in Zakynthos at Turtle Island, is the ultimate dream for any snorkeling enthusiast.

Sounds exciting? Wait until you discover the best beaches in Zakynthos island!

Dafni Beach, located on the Vasilikos Peninsula on the far southeastern border of Zante, is a must-visit for snorkelers looking for a secluded dive site. Although it may not be the easiest to access, this only adds to its appeal.

To reach the beach, it’s recommended to rent a tough car or a 4X4, as the dirt track can be bumpy and difficult to traverse.

Famed for having the warmest waters on the island, Dafni Beach is a sandy paradise and a popular nesting ground for the Caretta caretta turtle.

Snorkelers will love the numerous rockpools and interesting rock formations along the beach, which are home to a diverse array of marine species. Additionally, the coasts are well shielded from strong westerly winds, making it easy to get in the water.

Dafni Beach is also considered one of Zakynthos’s hidden gems, with its yearly turtle visitations and importance as a nesting ground for the loggerhead turtle, monitored by ecologists.

Despite the tricky dirt road, the effort to get to the beach is well worth it for the snorkeling opportunities and beautiful scenery. Keen snorkelers will find plenty of opportunities to explore underwater rock formations and rock pools.

Is Zante Good for Snorkeling?

Zante is one of the greatest Greek islands for snorkeling, with two quite diverse beaches and marine sanctuaries teeming with sea turtles.

Although it has stiff competition from Crete, which is often regarded as having the greatest snorkeling in Greece, it certainly puts up a fair fight, offering sandy beaches, rocky coves, and snorkeling options for all abilities.

Can You Swim with Turtles in Zante?

Zante is one of the greatest sites in Greece to swim with sea turtles. Cameo Island and Marathonisi are the finest places to do so (which is also known as Turtle Island). Respect, like with most animals, is essential.

Never disrupt turtle nesting grounds, never touch the turtles, and be aware of their aversion to strong lights, especially between May and October.

Protecting The Turtles

When snorkeling in Zakynthos, it’s important to also take care to protect the local sea turtle population, which faces threats from development, tourism, and predation. Visitors can help by following guidelines for minimal disturbance, such as:

  • not littering on the beach.
  • Staying away from designated nest sites.
  • Avoid observing nests at night.
  • It’s also important to be mindful of sun umbrellas and to stay at least 10 meters away from swimming or beached turtles.
  • While in a boat, travel at a low speed, remain calm, and respect requests from volunteers.
  • If you encounter a turtle in need of help, notify a nearby volunteer instead of trying to assist on your own.
  • You can find more details about the volunteers important work on the island here
