Tips for Using the Bus in Kalamaki Zakynthos
— From Locals Who Know

Bus Station Zante Town

We have been welcoming guests to Kalamaki since 1991, and over the years we have picked up a few tips that make using the bus much easier:

1. Tell the driver your stop. Bus drivers can avoid stopping at stops where people do not usually get off. If your destination is not the terminal of the route, it is recommended to inform the driver in advance so that you do not miss your stop.

2. Check the timetable board at the stop. The current schedule is posted on the shelter. Always check it on your first day so you know the last bus time, important if you are planning a night out in Zante Town.

3. The last bus back matters. The last bus from Zakynthos Town to Kalamaki is typically around 22:00–22:30. If you are planning a late evening in town, either take a taxi back (approximately €12) or make sure you know the final departure time.

4. Carry coins. Exact change makes boarding faster and drivers appreciate it, especially on busy summer mornings.

5. Buses can get full in peak season. In July and August, popular departure times can fill up. The bus can arrive at your stop with no room, and the next bus could be another two hours. Allow extra time if you have a specific connection to make.

6. Enjoy the ride. The route between Kalamaki and Zante Town passes through beautiful countryside and olive groves. It is a genuinely lovely 25-minute journey, sit back and enjoy it.

Is It Worth Renting a Car or Is the Bus Enough?

Honestly, it depends on what you want to do.

If your holiday plan is beach, pool, Zante Town and maybe Laganas, the bus is absolutely enough. It is cheap, frequent and reliable for these routes.

If you want to explore the far north of the island (Blue Caves, Navagio/Shipwreck Beach viewpoint), the mountain villages, Keri Lighthouse or Porto Roxa, you will need a car or a boat trip, as for visitors who plan on exploring the island and visiting more than just the touristy spots, renting a car is recommended.

Our recommendation: arrive, settle in, use the bus for the first few days to get your bearings, and then decide if a car rental for one or two days makes sense for the bigger day trips.
